Most of these sample countries have either been democracies for the entire period (hence no time series variation) or are post-Soviet countries, which had massive economic crises and instability post democratization.

This is becoming an issue in Canada with domestic violence. It appears that people are intuitively comparing women murdered by men to men murdered by women.
