A combination of both, maybe, but I lean towards the second. A connecting factor may be that attractive people are perhaps more confident and better at networking since they are apt to find themselves welcomed and noticed in personal encounters, more so than other people.

This seems like one of those studies that will be discredited when other researchers try to replicate the results. Or it is a spurious correlation. Editors have better things to do than look for profile pictures online

Not to mention that article referees (in reputable academic journals) are double blind. The submissions are evaluated for publication long before it is even possible to know who wrote them.
