Definitely. The smarter the animal, the more zoos struggle to keep them from going crazy from boredom. Do hunter gatherers struggling to survive show intense curiosity? Subsistence farmers?

How common has in been for humans to hunt these animals in this context? I feel like it wouldn't take many generations for "If the humans leave some weird thing for us, there's a good chance it's a trap, best leave it alone" to be selected for or culturally developed

Changing from a leaf to meat diet was the reason but not because of instincts, since all animals have that. The reduced need to constantly eat leaves because of the low nutrients they give. It also reduces the need for a big gut, so more energy can be used by the brain.

If cultural knowledge could only stay steady or decrease as seems to be the description for wild apes, there should be none. Observation seems like an equilibrium where there is also innovation. Maybe it happens under unusual conditions (similar to capitivity) that are missed?
-
Totally speculative: Suppose individuals have a target level for cultural knowledge. When they get it from their social environment they won't experiment. If it falls short they become more curious. When cultural knowledge disappears, innovation would fill it up again.

To me, not trained and on a hipshot, it means that curiousity is a luxury for those who feel to a certain degree-Safe. Like those who feel comfortable enough to be an artist.
