Loudly trumpeted paper, claiming that "low-quality information" (e.g., fake news) is as likely to go viral as good one, is retracted because of low-quality information. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-018-0507-0?WT.feed_name=subjects_genetics …pic.twitter.com/XUYgUdwgch

The "online attention" score is that of the original, false paper. It will be an interesting case study to see if the retraction gets the same publicity. It seems clear that the media somehow loved the original message. @tardomatic

Its Altmetric score seems to say it was. Also it was endlessly showcased in the press and is cited in a great deal of new academic papers dealing with fake news. Many people will have to put their house in order.

I cannot see why this cynical tone is in place. Authors made, found, and self-reported a mistake in data analysis. Problem seems to be that publication/promotion was based on finding in the first place, not on value and quality of study design itself. Latter remains unchanged.

My tone is not about the authors but about the media trumpeting the beloved story, with likely no (adequate) correction. They never do! Also, I do not know the backstory of the retraction. According to evidence most retractions contain only the tip of the iceberg of what occured

Pity, cos it's true that low grade (easy) info spreads *faster* than good (subtle) knowledge. Basic memetics.

Wonder how much traction the "high quality" reporting on this paper got (repeating it as fact).
