Psychologists have the illusion that I am writing this critique of IQ for them. No. Never argue theology w/a Salafi Sheikh. Psychologists are the losers in & out of campus. I am writing to expose the lack of rigor of these "metrics" to "intelligent" scientists & Fat Tonies.

Years ago I waged a war against "Value at Risk", an equally bogus measurement; like IQ, had a bunch of nerds clinging to it because "we have nothing better".https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=78&v=6QiiFSOrJhQ …

Can someone explain to this fellow @DegenRolf that all these contradictions are telling us is that variance of results from the IQ measure increases with IQ. Not a good thing. Please explain it slowly to him.https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/1081118653737824256 …

The claim that IQ matters for success only up to a certain threshold, popularized by Malcolm Gladwell, doesn't hold water. https://books.google.de/books?id=ouI2DwAAQBAJ&pg=PT139&lpg=PT139&dq=HOW+IMPORTANT+IS+INTELLIGENCE++IN+THE+DEVELOPMENT+OF++PROFESSIONAL+EXPERTISE?&source=bl&ots=6RfpLX_yWL&sig=SOgOstsZkb8EBj9C9-fQqSPOOME&hl=de&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjL2e7c5NPfAhVEa1AKHSXkD68Q6AEwAXoECAcQAQ#v=onepage&q=HOW%20IMPORTANT%20IS%20INTELLIGENCE%20%20IN%20THE%20DEVELOPMENT%20OF%20%20PROFESSIONAL%20EXPERTISE%3F&f=false … pic.twitter.com/eZtn1s2L1E

Actually he‘s saying something else: variance increases with a smaller sample size. Also he says that you have a point in areas where the requirements top out. E.g. at a conveyor belt with a fixed speed, being quicker than your co-worker doesn’t make you more productive.

He does not say anything. He has always been reporting curious or interesting papers, very rarely saying what he thinks about them. Sometimes he posted them for the lulz only. His tweets are wonderful and extremely informative, but they aren’t about his thought or research.

Actually, I often don't have a clear opinion about the stuff I post, just that I find it attention-grabbing, and I am always thrilled to see people who know more about it share their wisdom. I hope that benefits the advancement of science.

The sentence "doesn't hold water" is a (statistically false) statement about the relation between high IQ and success which propagates ignorance. Advancement of science wd be: "is controversial".

As a science writer, if you want to make a read palatable to the audience, you have to accentuate and sharpen the message, or nobody will pay attention. I know this will create the often false impression that I endorse the point. Can't help it.
