Bad science like "research" using control groups (eg waitlist) that do not have the same (exaggerated) expectations as the experimental group.
Lots of studies that compare therapies use waitlist as control. The point is those on the wait list are matched samples on the dimension of psychopathology...
Waitlists are not a neutral control, they exacerbate symptoms, so everything will appear to be better, even praying. Psychotherapy and other interventions commit fraud by still using this.
