Ravens, however, are observed to plan for the future..

Primates can do this too, but only for a span of a few hours. The next day, which involves going to sleep and being aware one will wake up the next day, is a gap I bet no animal can bridge in its mind.

Perhaps the capuchins knew they'd be getting more food than they could eat the next day? Perhaps the chimps know they can easily make a new tool whenever they need it?
-
This also happened when chimps had to undertakes long walks in order to find stones for cracking nuts. They just let them drop after use, which was severely self-defeating.

I like the idea of finding out if chimps would be inclined to save a midnight snack. it seems like such an obvious and simple concept for sentient beings to grasp, even dogs and squirrels stash snacks

Do animals that store food or migrate do so based on innate behavior, rather than actual planning for future events?
-
That sounds like a lot of research questions investigating alternative explanations. Maybe some animals do a bit of both. At what stage of development do we as children start planning and is there an in-between?

Just last night I watched a show that featured monkeys in Brazil that pull off coconut type seeds from a tree, rip off the casing, then leave them for a week or so to dry, grab one that has been drying for a week or so, and smash the old one. It's kind of like farming.
-
That is about a week cycle of forward planning.
