I think the interesting point here is that it's societies where women are more free to choose, but at the same time they are culturally influenced by past models. So they may just choose more freely... to fit the mould, like everyone seems to expect them to do.
This can't be the whole thing because some sex differences that are not open to choice - such as those in heart beat of waist-to-hip ratio - are also larger in more gender egalitarian countries. I posted that research.
