I imagine many spouses would prefer that. Certainly saving one's child is one of the commonest motives for SELF-sacrifice.

Literally,it’s in the *genes* to do so(I imagine)

The spouse has muuuuuch less genes in common than the child who has 50% Unless not too much has been invested in the child and it's easier and less costly to start over. Gruesome topic? Yep. But evolution doesn't care

Moreover most spouses would insist they be sacrificed to save the children first

I thought about this many years ago. Decided I would save my child. Reason: If I saved my wife, she wouldn't forgive me for letting our child die. So that relationship would be over anyway. You can put this in terms of inclusive fitness, but only after you deal with Occam.

There is an important insight in that its not as much of an "obvious choice" for men, compared to women
