The brain can adapt to any situation and make it seem "normal"... Would they feel the same way in the wild, where they would die in a probably gruesome way in a matter of hours/days? I don't think so...

It has been found that people adapt "hedonically" to all kinds of chronic diseases - unless those have an escalating course, with symptoms worsening more or less rapidly.
