The use of the term "meat" in the paper is misleading because this argument applies to beef only. Chicken, turkey, and pork all cause many times more farm animal suffering than dairy.
-
But also, if we're talking about non-flesh animal products that cause farm animal suffering, we should really be focusing on eggs which cause many times more suffering than dairy, beef, or pork.

Glossing over the error in caloric content of milk, per calorie might not be the most relevant way to look at this. Omnivores consume FAR more meat than vegetarians do dairy in caloric terms. Total calories consumed is not a a factor that should be dismissed here.
-
You could tell me cucumbers are as resource intensive per calorie as veal, but that doesn't make cucumber consumption a global concern

The use of sex selected semen to produce more female calves is a large and growing practice. A female is worth many times what a male is worth, so the cost of sexed semen is relatively small.

If the average dairy cow lives to 5 years, and produces 1 calf per year, where are all of those calves going? Male or female, the answer is, there is a surplus of dairy calves, hence there will be slaughters
