Slower to forget = less likely to adapt to a small, recent sample of the environment which might be non representative = more likely to adapt to the real environment.
Alternative headline: wiser birds survive longer. (“More likely to reverse learning” might be positively correlated with intelligence, but is definitely negatively correlated with wisdom.)
I'm not quite sure how accurate it is to say that the rate at which an organism learns and relearns conditioned material is a measure of intelligence. I'd love to see the same study done with problem solving tasks. There are puzzle solving crows that I suspect would survive well.
