If evolution favours reproduction, then they only need to be fertile, don’t they? Overall general health is a secondary concern.

Evolution favors survival of descendants. Having a healthy mate correlates with health and survival of offspring, both because the offspring will have better genes and because the mate will be able to care for and ensure the survival of the offspring.

Bad Reasoning. Health and accumulated cellular damage due to the product of the genes. Good genes persist regardless of the health and accumulated cellular damage to the body that produced them. People DO select for genes. Men will fight over 10's no matter how ill.

More likely mate choice is tied up with what other people find attractive rather than health, eg: finding a desirable partner improves our relative standing amongst peers or something like that

Not really we clearly aren't sexually attracted to sick people, eye bags aren't sexy. So there is correlation in the negative.
