I still remember Sedikides and Brewer making this point during Q&A after his talk at OSU in the 1990s. But strangely North American academics from Japan couldn’t give a rebuttal even though responsible for pushing this idea. I hope low self-esteem myth is next.

It's not as if you could tell tens of thousands of Japanese soldiers to fight to the death - no surrender - and them have almost every one of them do it.
