Most people I've encountered (after living in multiple different regions of the country) simply are not religious and can barely imagine what it it would be like to be religious. Many of them claim to be religious, however.

How do you define religiousness? Also doesn't it mean something during different times? Wedding/funeral vs a casual Tuesday.

We think social desirability bias might be at play, only we can't measure by how much. Or can we? Perhaps one could attempt to measure the deviation of behaviour from religious expectations as a proxy, but what allowances to make for human vulnerability to "sin"?

Plenty of religious people don't like going to the congregational weekly services because they are devoid of real feeling or spirit. You can't assume people who over report going to services don't have a solid spiritual life at home. Even in Judaism the home is spiritual focus.
