Children's own genetic traits play a greater role in the parenting they receive than has been previously recognized. http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1948550618784890 …pic.twitter.com/ng49SmK2HH

The missing factor! So much resonates, given the extreme personality differences between my two offspring. I treated them differently, because they acted differently toward me. Parents, take a deep breath - it wasn't *all* your fault.

Most parents of multiple kids knows this. I discipline my 3 children differently to be most effective with each.

Any good parent of multiple children should already know this. It's simple. For every action there is an equal and opposing reaction. And each of us act differently. Therefore, the reactions to our individual actions will differ individually.

Well what this study ignores is the power dynamic inherent in the parent-child relationship - and the responsibility of the "adult" to help the child best mediate his or her environment given whatever "genetic" personality traits they may have inherited.

Actually, such ideas have been around for quite a while. Two names that come to mind are Overton, and Richard Lerner. I'm sure there are more.

Child characteristics could also play into how said child internalizes parenting. That could cause issues too. Having said that, this child centered thing has caused spoilt and entitled children. So ugly.

Also, irrespective of my children’s personalities, I think it’s important to maintain a parent centered household. Otherwise things get really out of control. Everyone must follow the house rules, otherwise chaos ensues.

I’ve talked about this with friends and other moms with regards to our kids and parenting, so we are very aware, but it’s great to see something like this to validate what’s going on, especially when kids play parents off each other & manipulate.
