Since even the dumbest animals fear death, the paper is stupidhttps://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/1018794267811176448 …

Paper argues that evolution cannot have instilled an innate fear of death in humans, because the concept of "not being" is too elusive. (This still leaves the fear that the party goes on without us. Social comparison up to the end) http://rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/373/1754/20170269 … pic.twitter.com/F9XLxahXAD

I swear I see even typically smart people come up with the silliest takes on this topic. Dawkins paragraph on unweaving the rainbow that was just a poor rationalization, and philosophers like Shelly Kagan essentially have to redefine fear for not fearing death to make sense

Animals don't fear "death". They fear tangible threats. They cant imagine not being.

We know a lot of threats animals are predisposed to respond to, even having sentinels for these. eg predators, birds of prey, snakes, bodily harm ect. None of these involves a mental representation of not being, which even adult humans with mental disabilities seem to lack.

Predators pose threat to their lives right? They are not afraid of others that do not pose such a threat. They behave exactly as one would expect if they feared for their life. Interested to know how you see into their minds to know what representations they are/are not making.

Your approach reminds me of the belief up to the 80s that infants don't feel pain. Sure they scream and cry and go into shock but it's not pain pain, like what we experience in our minds so no need for anaesthesia when doing heart surgery. (True story)
