Although homosexuals, in general, tend to have more (casual) sex partners, I always wondered if their sexual experiences might be somewhat less exciting because the lack of "otherness", meaning the absence of the opposite sex, which brings an element of not-self to the game.

That's partly because the study is focused on undergrads. Gay undergrads are clueless about sex. The point about committed relationships is probably valid regardless of age though, and I'd guess that gay undergrads are the least likely to have a committed relationship.
