Liberals are really more likely to drink lattes than conservatives, but not for the reason the cliché suggests. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/ps-political-science-and-politics/article/real-reason-liberals-drink-lattes/5544153706BEFC44374ECB6BDF5169A8 …pic.twitter.com/R2XPlNkXG0

By the way: Coffee drinkers should be aware that their habit is one of the worst environmental sins. https://www.degruyter.com/view/j/lehr.2017.11.issue-2/lehr-2017-0008/lehr-2017-0008.xml …pic.twitter.com/TtwiuOb0hG

Don't get too shaken up by coffee's water use. The average American consumes 7800 L/day in virtual water, of which 1700 L/day through meat, and another 700 L/day in milk. To get to an average meat level of virtual water use through coffee, you're up at 13 cups/day.

Here's the reference for US virtual water use, it's by the same guys who did the coffee analysis.http://www.pnas.org/content/109/9/3232 …

Kind of assumes that all water use is equally bad. I know NO ONE in NE Italy / W. Slovenia / NW Croatia who irrigates their olive trees and irrigated potatoes are almost unknown in Europe (as are irrigated wheat / barley). Olives / potatoes / winter cereals are rainfed.

Except that, on a daily basis, people consume 10 g of coffee grounds at most, but certainly more than 200 g of meat. The way the information is put in this except is heavily biased.

surely the water does not depart our planet should we not be examining how much of this water is contaminated or spoiled in some way rather than measuring it in cups?

Correct, in theory water can be reused much more efficiently than other resources, but wouldnt take this for granted

there's no telling me it's criminal to grow rice I'm prepared to be convinced coffee is bad, though, I'll take any excuse to try to kick the habit but it needs to be science

That's *extremely* bad math. An average coffee drinker consumes far less coffee (in g) than an average meat eater. Rough googling suggests ~450l/day of water for the avg. coffee drinker, ~5000l/day of water for the avg. meat eater.

But one should not forget that meat contains fat and proteins which are required for survival. Coffee or carbohydrates are not necessary.

For whatever it's worth- Spent coffee grounds make great compost for soil enhancement. Works in every type of composting. Not nearly as true for many other kitchen scraps.

@Jesse_Livermore a kg of coffee lasts weeks. I don't know how many many meals a kilo of lamb is good for, but you see the point.
