“most people rarely if ever innovate new products” What’s the baseline for this being surprising? Do the authors expect that since we’re all so smart, we should all be creating new products? Many humans are funny - is it surprising that most never do a comedy show?

I think what it says is, without endorsing it, is, though technological innovations are the most dramatic and life changing, they are not what our intellect evolved for. So they tend to come from very few and rather atypical individuals. Which points to a big chance element.

Which is why, on a planet with over 7 and a half billion people and counting, it's not such an issue. As we really only need a teeny tiny fraction of us, to be innovators, to keep pushing the envelope.
-
As long as that tiny fraction gets to do their thing without getting ostracized for doing it.

Ok, that makes me feel slightly better about being socially awkward. And I have made several innovative new products. I know i stay with an unsolved problem much longer than other people. Is that because I'm less socially engaged?
