On raising the bar: your OP compares people with ethics exposure to average, not on a measure of theory-behavior fit, but absolute behavior. On Singer: his theory says it seems you should live on $30k/year, and always maintained that he did not (i.e. self-reports consistent)
No, he let people believe he DID, until he was exposed. He even gave the reason: I'd do better if others did too. But that came AFTER the exposure. Would have been nice to know this beforehand.
What self-reports? Did he claim to be living to such a standard (in 1999)? $30K was suggested as an average. He doesn't imply it would apply to NYC or other expensive life situations. The principle was to avoid luxury. You're quick to charge others with dishonesty, it seems.
