Neither being an ethics professor nor completing academic ethics classes leads to any measurable improvement in moral behavior. http://schwitzsplinters.blogspot.com/2018/06/does-it-harm-philosophy-as-discipline.html …pic.twitter.com/C0LI9lQq5o

One possible reason why neither ethicists nor ethics class graduates show any improvements in moral behavior is that people are only motivated to behave "just good enough", compared to others, in order not to end as suckers in the evolutionary game of life http://schwitzsplinters.blogspot.com/search/label/ethics%20professors …pic.twitter.com/45Br9V2VY1

Even Peter Singer, who is often portrayed as a near-saint, shows clear signs of the above discussed sucker-avoidance mechanism. http://reason.com/archives/2000/12/01/the-pursuit-of-happiness-peter …pic.twitter.com/X4t6wGv3kA

Yes, 20% of one's income, strict veganism, and compulsive truth-telling are "just good enough."

I feel like you've also tweeted about evidence of people punishing super-cooperators in prisoner games. Also and interesting phenomenon 🙂

They punish/abhor do-gooders AND hypocrites, who feign being do-gooders without paying the price. By not being forthrightly about his donation behavior, Singer has damaged his credibility and become suspect of being a hypocrite.

This thread's asks why ethicists are no more ethical than average, not whether they exactly live up to the standards they teach. Singer is far above average; not doing "just enough." The theory is that society sets the bar, not your own theory, right?

You seem to miss our explosive response to even the appearance of moral hypocrisy. I have no longer any clue about Singer's "real" behavior.https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/992270935087431680 …

I'm sorry I brought up the punish hypocrisy research (admittedly as a dig); all I'm saying is that Singer is a bad example for the proposition "exposure to ethics doesn't increase ethical behavior" on just the facts cited in the reason article!

Given the fact that he was busted being dishonest about his morality, I (and may others) no longer trust his self-reports. Being a moral model raises the bar high. Mother Teresa failed likewise.
