Yes, 20% of one's income, strict veganism, and compulsive truth-telling are "just good enough."
I feel like you've also tweeted about evidence of people punishing super-cooperators in prisoner games. Also and interesting phenomenon
A ‘near saint’?
To err is human.
I have to strongly disagree with Singer that giving away the majority of your wealth is ethical. Turns out that by investing, you can give away more (later) by withholding more (now). And turning yourself poor means you yourself may require assistance you did not need before.
Luckily, letting someone die is almost the opposite of murder. Giving money to the poor like that is irresponsible and only increases the sum total of suffering.
Singer is so sophisticated he doesn't need to acknowledge the difference between intent and result.
“People shouldn’t eat meat”, said the Vegetarian. “So I don’t eat meat.” “People should pay an honest tithe”, said the Mormon. “So I give 10% of my salary to tithing.” “People should live on no more than 30K/yr and give the rest to the poor”, said Peter Singer. *smug grin*
The guy is pro infanticide, whoever is portraying him as a saint needs to stop doing that asap.
That misrepresents his view, which he says might imply infanticide was permissible if other considerations such as value to others and the need for broad principles were ignored.
