Every sitting Joint Chiefs chairman and defense secretary has hosted one. They are all a bit back-slapping (via the president's appointed SecDefs) but they're also more than that.
The full-honors Pentagon event thrown by the military’s leaders for their civilian president, from any political party, would showcase to the world their support for American democracy and a peaceful transfer of power. That chance was squandered last week, if not long ago.
