Holy sugary drink tax! Finally saw this w/ my own eyes. $10.34 of tax on a pack of Gatorade @Costco in #Seattle. 💸 Costco also reminding you hey - no tax on this outside the city. Thoughts?? @KIRO7Seattlepic.twitter.com/xN2C4Csoe7

$400,000 of the tax proceeds are slated to go to low income families for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. $1,600,000 will go to ADMINISTRATIVE COST$ RIDICULOUS!!!!!!

Hi Angie, I asked the city about that. I’m told it’s a one time cost to hire people and expand the Fresh Bucks program. The following year, there will be a much smaller administrative cost.

There's no such thing as a "one time cost" when it comes to govt bureaucracy 🙄

Glad I live in Pierce County. Is orange juice taxed too? Lots of sugar.

Not if it’s 100% juice and doesn’t have added sugar!

This will hurt Seattle business owners in so many ways- People will REFUSE to pay tax that is more than the product ITSELF- well see HOW long this lasts! Pierce county for one will see an influx of business!

Obviously you didn't watch what happened in Cook County, IL when they instituted a 1 cent tax per oz. Costcos in Cook saw a 34% drop in purchase of sugar drinks, those right over the border from Cook in Will county saw a 37% increase in sales of sugar drinks, so answer is yes

That’s not the question at hand, the question is will people travel 10+miles to not pay a tax and the answer is yes. I completely cut sugar drinks out you won’t get an argument from me they are good for you. BTW the cook tax was repealed 2 months later because of popular revolt

I don’t care. My point is and always has been that people do not need soda. These products contribute heavily to obesity and other health problems.

Seattlites can avoid the huge increase on sugar products by buying outside the city limits. While you are out there you might as well get the rest of your groceries too.

I think that Oregon residents are right to be proud of their "no sales taxes" obsession, because this is what bureaucrats and politicians start trying to do once they realize that it's possible.

Personally: I am disabled and have a low income so I am excessively advantaged under most income tax regimes, and correspondingly disadvantaged under higher sales and property tax regimes. More generally: it depends on what percentage of your income you spend on taxable goods.
