That's how the research library at my local historical society does it. They only have patrons wear gloves when handling photos and occasionally old newspapers, for the ink in the pages

Curious! How do gloves damage books? That’s really interesting.

They make you fumble. You have less dexterity. They can cause your fingers to slip on fragile paper, causing tears and breakage. It's just not necessary.
