  7. An image from 1 of 2 copies of the Nuremberg Chronicle. This one, from 1493, has a beautiful illuminated capital & some not-so-beautiful hand coloring. The blue & gold are still so fresh, even after 500 years. A great example of how manuscript & printed books overlap.

  10. Also: the illuminator made a goof. He wrote a beautiful capital P instead of a T, thereby creating a new ancient philosopher called "Phales" instead of Thales. Later, a reader inserted a T in the margins.

  11. A really old bookmark in an early (1477) printed copy of Walter Burley's LIVES OF THE PHILOSOPHERS made my day. It is now pink and cream striped silk. When it was new, I suspect is was red and gold. My students & I were pretty thrilled to find it in
