Ended up asking questions of five women and four men, and three men *told me off* for not picking them afterwards (we only got through about a quarter of the raised hands).

I always ask the first question of women when I chair, and it makes a huge difference, with far more women putting their hands up. Small thing, but genuinely important if you want a gender balance in a floor discussion.

Also, if you want good questions, go round the room. If you want "this is more of a statement than a question, it comes in 18 parts and contains my entire biography and a proclamation that I know more about this than you" monologues, pick exclusively from the front row.

Why advise picking a woman first?
-
It has been shown that picking women first encourages women to ask further questions at the same rate as men. Asking men first makes it more likely that future questions will be asked by a majority of men.

Yeah, shut up Scott. An equal number of men and women want to say this, but it's important a woman went first.
