Obviously it'd be better if buy to let had never happened, or houses had been replaced one for one as promised. But loads of young renters do live on estates, which shows the gulf between media homeowners and the rest of society.

They haven't been to an estate in decades if ever, but continue to push this dystopian vision of them as no-go areas. They've been flogged, especially in London. We need that social stock back rather than just offering kickbacks for private developers.

And one of the reasons younger people aren't revulsed by the idea of council housing is they've seen that the communities have accidentally become mixed rather than ghettoised, and work, so should be replicated, to make more affordable communities.

Also imagine the boost to the community if rent & housing benefit were lower: your spending power goes up and into the local economy, govt expenditure on HB goes down, social rent is reinvested by the council instead of lining a private landlord's pocket.

Arguments against building council housing are always focused on punching down - "I worked hard to get my house, why should other people get something for nothing?" They're not, they're just paying affordable rent rather than bumping up profits, and secure, stable homes save ££££

I'm guessing most of the people making this accusation have never lived on one themselves?

I live in social housing on a social housing estate, I will defend it ferociously. My eldest child has to rent a room from his Grandmother despite a well paid job as private rent would swallow his entire income & at 23 no help is available.
