Brexit is endlessly tiresome for myriad reasons but this habit of labelling very split areas as "leave" or "remain" is so reductive: my hometown, Newport, had 56% vote leave, 44% remain. That's a lot of remain voters, still.

Even now, though I live in the most "remain" area bar Gibraltar, 1 in 3 of my neighbours voted to leave. Hillingdon had same % of leave voters as Newport, but London gets branded a liberal idyll, and Wales et al a bunch of closed-minded knuckle-draggers

Also interesting politically to see Wales and Sunderland singled out for a lot of heat, when all bar one of the 10 highest "leave areas" and in the East Mids/East of Englandpic.twitter.com/lYoTRpAgUb

I'm mystified as to how Lincolnshire/the Fens STILL get left out of this story, despite their dominance in that list.

It's like the ONE TIME that my home area is super relevant in the news and it's still being mostly ignored. It's bizarre.

Yes, think it boils down to focus on cities. Lots of friends from Lincolnshire, and reasons for leave vote there are very obvious: me and @PeterMandler1 discussed this at an event last year

As you know, lots of young people leave because there are no jobs. High influx of EU migrants doing jobs no one else wants are wrongly seen as 'taking' jobs rather than usual post-industrial bind. It's a much more interesting story!

Totally, and a lack of central government support, cuts in resources, and a city (Peterborough) with a complicated racial history. I keep meaning to write a local history piece about the area from that perspective... guess I probably should do that.

Whereas leavers I know in Wales felt it was a protest vote because nothing improved day to day under Tories or Labour, and they felt they were kicking back at Westminster.

Unfortunately they were way off the mark.

Dawn's point is also where education, class and generation intersect - 'leave' areas often those from which mobile young people have, er, left. Thus jobs for young immigrants.
