Brexit is endlessly tiresome for myriad reasons but this habit of labelling very split areas as "leave" or "remain" is so reductive: my hometown, Newport, had 56% vote leave, 44% remain. That's a lot of remain voters, still.

Completely agree with this. I find the comments/jokes about London + remain areas etc forming new countries and leaving the proles to their fate really tiresome. I live in a post industrial northern town where 45% of us voted remain.

Yes, that "let London be independent!" schtick was sickening. Lot of the impetus for voting leave was how London sucks in wealth, impoverishing post-industrial areas that haven't recovered from 2008 while London booms

I bet the figure levels out even more if you accounted for people who commute in for work. The reporting is ridiculous.

*quiet voice* I agree with so much of this thread but as a Londoner born & bred am so tired of the London bashing. I can see how we’ve arrived at this division though but how do we move forward as a country?

That’s my gripe. I see the geographical division as a cliche. I’m a northerner who loves London. The leave/remain split is everywhere even if the proportions differ. Don’t know what the answer is other than being alert to cliche and bullshit. With love from the north!x
