and the "humour" in it is entirely mirthless. The prudery in it strikes me as specifically around the description of sensuality, rather than sexuality per se.

I mean British people are usually more comfortable with descriptions of sex that are embarrassing or bawdy. They can't bear anything that doesn't giggle though.
