The best science book I ever read was The Making Of The Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes which doesn't fit your criteria cos it's 500 pages of physics and 500 pages of the history side up to Hiroshima...
It's incredibly well written, to the point that even the (often long) sections I couldn't understand cos I'm not a physics professor still had a powerful prose which compelled me onwards.
