As Stan says, the “non-Welsh” aspect was whiplash-inducingly uncomfortable, and mercifully the headline’s now changed but it’s still a bit all over the place https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/jun/23/anthem-lessons-how-wales-bed-in-their-players-born-outside-the-country?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …https://twitter.com/tristandross/status/1408033702240718851 …

neco was born in wrexham, too, so his inclusion here is a bit baffling! he was eligible to play for england, but he'd be a 'non-english player' by the original framing. think there's definitely some interesting insights within the piece more generally, glad the headline's changed

Yeah, I had to go back to understand why on earth Neco was included. The article just seems really embarrassingly desperate to talk about race implicitly but not mentioning the biggest aspect: player choice and their own feelings about their Welshness?!

Think that’s in reference to age group international games/camps - which is a great point as England usually come calling at later ages, so creates a loyalty for those with dual heritages towards Wales when it’s time to choose.

But yeah, as someone who’s an England fan (these days etc etc) but has Welsh grandparents and a Welsh heritage I’m proud of, were I a footballer and being called “non-Welsh” I’d be fuming at that old headline too
