Anaemia caused by diet is actually pretty rare! Heavy periods are the main cause for women. We’re pretty bad at absorbing iron from food anyway, hence prescribed tablets having far more iron than your RDA.

For some reason loads of people are convinced they know more about anaemia than doctors and aggressively tell you to immediately stop your free prescribed meds and just eat black pudding/expensive supplements with far less iron in a way they do far less often with epilepsy.

Apologies for the millions of Guinness recommendations from Irish people.

Irish people understand there’s not much iron in Guinness though: it’s always English people who say “have you tried Guinness?” Yes mate. I pointed out to one guy who told me to stop my tablets and eat black pudding I’d need about 4kg a day to replace my three tablets.

When I was vegetarian I had the same, and at no point had anaemia. Diet-induced anaemia is super rare! *Still* get people telling me to change my diet. I eat red meat now and did so for the decade before I got anaemia, it was the adenomyosis that did it, not a lack of beef.

God. I got pretty bad anaemia from (probably) diet, and even then the solution was... oh yes, prescribed iron from the doctors.

I’ve never managed to get any of the incredibly-opposed-to-prescribed-iron-tablets brigade to explain to me why they think they’re so harmful and fizzy orange sachets from health shops are a more effective anaemia cure, genuinely really strange. Ferrous fumarate did cure me.
