Also have to self-isolate for a week before I go in (thanks, Covid), so I’ve got seven days immediately prior when I’m not allowed to leave the house under any circumstances or answer the door to give me a headstart, so essentially make it 17 days.

Preparing meticulously since once I ended up stuck on the neuro ward with no phone, broke my glasses which in turn meant I had both stitches and an eye patch, so spent a week reading the one book they had on the ward with the page four centimetres away from my one “good” eye.

I'd read Robert Harris's Cicero trilogy. Anything by Donna Tartt. I'd recommend The Secret History. If you like well-written police procedurals, Tana French is excellent. Have you read Hilary Mantel's Cromwell trilogy yet? It's fantastic.

I haven’t actually read any Hilary Mantel (I know, I know!) but think I have at least one of her books kicking around
