Okay, so I've said letter, because I love the idea of the had written. But, on reflection, I have never received a full letter. I've received thank you cards, which are lovely, but don't say much beyond 'Thank You, from Name'. However, I have received detailed emails about how..

...i have changed students opinions of the whole subject, and they are changing degree pathways because of my teaching. So, in my actual experience - email explaining the input of a teacher over a card. But, a card/letter with that detail in it? I'd carry it in my pocket forever

However, if you are going years back - my aunt is a secondary school teacher, who received a letter from a student who was very troubled in her youth. My aunt was a person who believed in her. My aunt received a letter, maybe 5 years into her retirement. She keeps it with her.

Oh that is such a beautiful story! This was similar: I had a very difficult home life as a teen, this teacher engaged and enthused everyone but was particularly kind to me, recommended books, led me to study English at uni.

When she got a different job, leaving just as I’d sat my GCSEs I think she guessed I might become disengaged, so encouraged me to do A Levels at her new school. And it was a much better fit, loads of great teachers, so I’d put a fair amount of detail in thanking her, not a card.

I often don't think teachers realise just how much of an impact they have on young people. A careless sentence, at vulnerable times, by an adult, can, genuinely devastate. And, in the other hand, simple encouragement can open up a pathway.

Completely agree: when I changed schools after I was kicked out of home at 13 a new teacher asked where I lived, sneered & said “I bet you get free school meals too” so I just stopped eating lunch because she’d made me feel even more worthless exactly when I was convinced I was.

Firstly, I'm so sorry to hear that. Secondly, exactly! Young people are so vulnerable. Why wouldn't an educator be kind? I love lecturing. I love exciting people about sociology. It's my absolute joy. I find it so hard that some teachers suck all care out of teaching.

Sociology was one of my favourite school subjects! Similarly, the teacher was very kind, super enthused about her subject & had a wicked sense of humour. Was fascinated to learn things like aspects of class, upwards/downwards convergence were actual proven theories.

I remember repeatedly being in lessons where she’d explain a concept and all of us being amazed there was psychology/studies backing up things we’d casually observed, like being give keys to unlock a new world.
