This is really brilliant. Also really bothers me when people share missing persons posts on social media with mobile numbers not case codes and the missing persons phone number: it could be a concerned family member, but it’s also how abusers track down people fleeing them.https://twitter.com/CharlieBCuff/status/1380525652017872896 …

Think a lot of people want to help, but don’t know how missing persons cases are investigated, and assume very few people go missing every year, when at least 176,000* in the UK do (*likely to be a significant underestimate, that’s just the number reported to the police.)

This seemingly well meaning Nextdoor post from this week is how not to post on social media about missing people. So you want people to call 999 if they see a boy cycling in shorts. Incorrect number, no name, no identifying photo, minimal identifying clothing.pic.twitter.com/27IUniR86D

On the mobile number thing, to try and break the cycle, I think all you can really do is this: people either do it without thinking, or understandably point out that it’s likely the family members may feel the police haven’t felt helpful. But you can’t tell which.https://twitter.com/DawnHFoster/status/1380550970267029505 …
