I remember when I was ill during a trip to New York and just spent the day watching TV and my jaw almost fell off at all the medicine adverts: “ask your doctor for X.” We just describe our symptons and get what the doctor think’s best.

Yeah, it’s illegal here. You can advertise non-prescription drugs, but the tone of the American ones “demand this from your doctor*, here are all the horrible side effects” really threw me. *We rely on docs to diagnose us, not give us a drug we saw on TV.
