School uniforms are also incredibly easy to hand down in/between families - the only thing that stressed us out was kids judging our shoes and bags.

Absolutely. One shop per town having a monopoly on uniform is horrific. It's always more expensive than generic kit from the supermarkets and when it extends to PE bags, book bags etc it's somewhat taking the mickey.

I always stood out as poor at secondary school * because * of uniform hand-me-downs, trousers always too short, etc. You could only buy the "official" uniform via the school and it was expensive. Added to that the uniform was the only thing the teachers seemed to care about.

Any idea if schools have to declare in their finances how much they get back from forcing single source suppliers?

My kids’ uniform supplier was Asda, with a tie and sew on blazer badge from the school office for a couple of quid, or free to FSM.
