Went to a private and a grammar school. Tear them down brick by brick.

Going to grammar school just doesn't work even for some "clever" people. My Mum passed her 11+ and went to Colchester Grammar and she hated it. The girls there looked down their noses at her and she didn't make any friends. She wasn't there long.
-
I got a bursary place at an indie in 1967 - Bristol abolished the 11+ in ‘66. Hated it. Was in a comp by Y9. Results were rubbish but that was mainly because I discovered boys.

I remember Andrew Neil doing a whole documentary that basically came to that conclusion.

I went to one they're utterly grotesque packed full of kids that would've otherwise gone to private school if it wasn't an option and the racial disparities were grotesque no black kids in my year out of 180 kids in Aylesbury.
-
Doubt if that’s the case now. Invigilated A level maths a couple of years ago. Sitting for hours watching kids sweat is boring as hell - so did a head count. 100ish kids in the hall - high 80s % non-white. >

Grammar schools arguably used to give an opportunity for working class children to have a decent education (while leaving the rest on the rubbish heap) but only when the selection process was fair. Now only middle class children pass because of the need for years of tutoring.
-
The selection process for grammar schools was, in fact, never fair.
