Oh piss off, Scott. If I point out that Leo Varadkar was first sitting Taoiseach in Irish history not to top the poll in own constituency I’m not damaging anything. https://twitter.com/scottdebuitleir/status/1358404738413387777 …

But his opinions, actions and policies were so unpopular that he didn’t top the poll as a sitting Taoiseach. It’s an entirely relevant criticism

Granted, but what about a situation under STV where a politician doesn’t get in on a first count but gets a wave of transfers at the third or fourth count? That’s not exactly squeaking in and wouldnt be a great basis for assessment of competence.

Consider the case of Thomas Pringle in Donegal. He only makes it on the 9th count, but he's a TD of 10 years standing . There I would view him getting in in a tight race as a validation of that ability and experience, which resulted in him picking up transfers.
