Quick question for the #chronicpain community, I am long used to ginding my teeth to a pulp but all day my tongue really stings with any food/drink. It is white- have I started biting my tongue in my sleep? @DawnHFoster

You might have done - is it the sides? That’s the bit I bite with seizures, and can usually tell I’ve had a seizure in my sleep when the sides are sore and white, but worth speaking to a doctor to check other symptoms to rule out, who might refer you to a dentist for a teethguard

I have spent years on & off grinding my teeth & am due another mouthguard when my NHS dentist can put it for it bit I never have experienced anything like this with my tongue-only lukewarm tea is bearable. It's not at the sides though, it's right down the middle. Stingy AF!

I'd imagine if it was grinding there would be actual abrasions or cuts on your tongue. You can get oral Thrush after a course of antibiotics.

Yeah, I’ve always usually got actual wounds except when it’s mild then I only have small white marks on the sides where I’ve clearly bitten through the skin partially - the NHS page says a pharmacist can usually help diagnose it:https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/sore-or-white-tongue/ …

This is so helpful, GRMA for taking the time to help me, it is hugely appreciated.

Ah it’s no problem, hope they can help, and get well soon!

Might also be worth giving 111 a call, because if it’s B12 deficiency it might also be causing anaemia, and they can get a doctor to call you back and tell you if you need a blood test to rule it out and can probably also suggest ways to eat/drink with worsening the pain?

Yes, I think I will as low blood pressure/ iron deficiency is something that my GP is supposed to keep an eye on (unfortunately the health centre has been closed for a deep clean as there has been a covid outbreak with 80 staff isolating...)

80 staff! 111 should be able to signpost alternative services in that case. My local hospitals have blood test centres, for eg https://www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/our-services/blood-tests/blood-tests.aspx …

Might also be worth trying a tongue scraper gently - again, I’d ask a pharmacist once you tell them the problem, as they’re bound to have them

I definitely will, as my local pharmacy staff are incredible.
