In the UK the number of cases rose rapidly. But the public – and authorities – are only learning this now because these cases were only published now as a backlog. The reason was apparently that the database is managed in Excel and the number of columns had reached the maximum. pic.twitter.com/X4a8keSEHK

every business I've worked at (except maybe, ironically, Microsoft) manages core processes in Excel, it's amazing.

Why oh why did the government set up brand new part-privatised lab network rather than boosting NHS pathology labs? Suggestion here is that existing NHS labs had better reporting systems, so wouldn’t have been using shonky spreadsheets we’re told are to blame for missing figs. https://twitter.com/ShaunLintern/status/1313047799714459649 …

lol back when I was a Real Researcher - TWENTY YEARS AGO - I remember confronting 'why the FUCK does excel have a column maximum' (i didn't really use excel, it was a way to convert between data formats if you didn't hit the column limit)

That long ago the maximum rows would have been about 64k. Now it's over a million, but the limit is well known and should be recognised as a limitation by anyone using it, let alone for a huge data project.
