When did people generally start getting mobile phones? As in, when was it assumed most people had them?

I got one in 1999 because I was sick of going to the pay phone because our flat had no landline. It had become affordable and I was one of the last ones of my friends to get one. It took weeks to realise people had been texting me- I didn’t realise they did that!

There was a point when one of the mobile networks let you send text messages for free from their rudimentary website. Can’t remember which one. Saved me 12p a message when near a computer (Windows 95 obvs)
