When did people generally start getting mobile phones? As in, when was it assumed most people had them?

In 1999, my best mate got fed up with me not having one and so gave me her old Nokia with £10 credit on it. By the following year most people at school had one (we were in year 11 at a state school)

Wish I didn't have one tbh. My dad has an ancient Nokia that stays turned off in his pocket until he needs to make a call and that sounds more and more like bliss these days.
