This is a crucial, barely mentioned issue for students confined to halls. I worked in the university nursery and crèche, did typing and babysitting in term times and cleaning in the holidays. I had a grant but no other source of financial support and once at university I didn’t go back home.

Yep. Had no home to go to, and first year at university is so alienating to young people in our position - *that’s* your home now, but most people don’t get kicked out of their home for a month every ten weeks then have to sublet for three months in summer.
