Amazing to hear the voice of Martin Luther King the other night and realise once more how much closer American were to British accents back then. How and why have they drifted further apart? Mainly American accents have got more ‘American’, even if ours have differently changed?

Yea, someone else in the comments pointed out it was because Walter Cronkite’s Midwestern accent set the standard for television broadcasters imitating him, who influenced the country at large in turn
