If a member of the public hadn’t called an ambulance and refused to let the police leave before they arrived, my neighbour wouldn’t have seen me in the street, confirming I had epilepsy and this was often what I was like after seizures.

I struggled to form sentences, confirmed my address but refused to believe we were stood outside it, didn’t have my phone, keys or purse, but didn’t smell of booze, and would obviously have passed a breathalyzer. The paramedics immediately confirmed it looked like a seizure.

I ended up being in hospital for four days, which did me more good than being locked in a cell for a few hours would.

That's sh*t, Dawn. Had to look up "postictal".. didn't realise there was a name for it. Used to care for a lady who, among other things, had epilepsy; it could be an hour before she came round after a seizure. The police can't know everything, but basics should be taught.

I once got in a f/book argument with someone who said the police should not waste time on drunks. Just a few minutes' googling produced links to 5 news stories - 5 individuals with 5 separate medical conditions being accused of being drunk when they were ill.
