Have seen other people argue that not having uniform means parents don’t have to purchase uniform. But it shows how few clothes you have! Affordable uniforms, eg polo shirts, or white shirts & black bottoms with school tie can be bought cheaply, donated, handed down to siblings

Similarly, schools that insist on hard to purchase colours, or worse still, that you have to buy from certain shops are knowingly entrenching poverty.

This is so true. School uniform wasn't compulsory in primary for me growing up, but remember I didn't wear one and one snotty teacher kept pulling me up on it. I was of course too embarrassed to say my parents were too poor to afford the custom-printed jumpers they sold.

Actually remember Grange Hill doing a story line on this, Amy kept getting told off for not wearing exactly uniform until they found out the issue and the teachers and other students helped her - remember feeling so heard by that storyline!

Agreed. My son's current school requires that the uniform is purchased from a specific supplier. £55 for a cheaply made jumper with logo printed on it, similar PE top and a striped tie. They don't like parents not buying shirts, trousers and socks from there either...

...but they can fuck off with that. £18 for one shirt and £20 for a pair of trousers. They're no different that Tesco 3 for £7 ones either. Not as bad as his primary school which changed uniforms every two years, 1 supplier - each time costing £65+ for a single basic set.

Hopefully nowadays they have a way of showing that you are entitled to a free school meal without showing a voucher. Not sure how that would work but showing that you are in anyway different is always problematic in schools.
